An Abakaliki-based businessman and philanthropist, Chief Mgbemena Onyedika, has pledged the sum of N1 million to Abakaliki FC if the team triumphs over Kwara United in the final of this year’s President Federation Cup.
Chief Onyedika, who serves as the Urban Coordinator of the Francis Frontiers support group, made the pledge during an interview with our reporter in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
He described the gesture as his personal contribution to motivate the team to clinch the title and make the state proud.
“This is my way of encouraging the boys to give their all in the final. They’ve done incredibly well to reach this stage, and I believe they deserve every support they can get,” he said.
The philanthropist urged well-meaning Ebonyians to rally behind the team, stressing that the upcoming match is the toughest yet for the young club.
“Final games, especially cup matches, are difficult to navigate. The boys have defeated strong Premier League clubs to get to this point, but finals come with unique challenges,” he noted.
“I will donate N1 million to them if they win and bring the trophy home,” he added.
Chief Onyedika, fondly known as “Ozo Nwa Inyanga,” also commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for establishing Abakaliki FC and revitalizing the sports sector in the state.
Abakaliki FC, also known as the “Rice Boys,” have made history by reaching the final in their debut season. They defeated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) sides Nasarawa United, Enyimba FC, and Ikorodu City en route to the final.
The team will face Kwara United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Saturday in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
