The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma over the State’s low Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue in the first quarter of 2025, describing it as evidence of a failing economy and poor governance.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, the party pointed to recently released figures showing Imo ranked 35th out of Nigeria’s 36 States, generating just N2.34 billion in VAT—only ahead of Taraba State, which recorded N2.33 billion.
“This figure, the worst performance in Southern Nigeria, confirms that the Uzodimma-led administration has crippled the economy, stifled business activity, and failed to attract investment,” the PDP stated.
Citing comparative data, the opposition party noted that neighbouring Anambra generated N10.73 billion and Ebonyi N7.43 billion in the same period. The PDP argued that VAT revenue, which reflects economic activity, consumption, and productivity, underscores the extent of economic stagnation in Imo.
The statement accused the Governor of lacking a viable economic plan and criticized the reported closure of about 70% of hotels and entertainment establishments in the State.
The party also alleged mismanagement of local government allocations, stating that over N500 billion received by the State’s LGAs in the last five years had not translated into visible economic development.
“Despite receiving N162 billion in LGA allocations over the past 16 months, Imo has little to show in terms of economy-stimulating projects,” the party said.
The PDP further alleged that governance had been centralized under Uzodimma, weakening ministries and local councils. It called on the Governor to “free up the economy” and urgently adopt a robust economic policy to reverse the decline.
Governor Uzodimma has yet to respond to the allegations at the time of this report.
