The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Nigerians to use the June 12 Democracy Day to reaffirm their commitment to democratic values and resist what it described as attempts by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to establish a one-party state.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP accused the APC-led federal government of undermining democratic institutions, violating constitutional provisions, and stifling opposition voices
“The APC government continues to use compromised state apparatus to violate the Constitution, emasculate the opposition, and weaponize poverty in a bid to impose a totalitarian regime,” the statement read.
The PDP pointed to recent political developments, including the crisis in Rivers State and the conduct of the 2024 Edo State governorship election, as evidence of what it termed “state capture” and the erosion of democratic norms.
The opposition party urged democratic institutions such as the National Assembly, the Judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to assert their independence and uphold the rule of law. It also called on civil society organizations, development partners, and Nigerians at large to speak out against what it sees as threats to democracy.
While congratulating Nigerians on Democracy Day, the PDP encouraged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding but to stay vigilant and united in the defense of democratic principles.
The party also reiterated its commitment to repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
