President Bola Tinubu has sent a stirring message of encouragement to Nigeria’s Super Falcons ahead of their titanic clash against host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), taking place tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
In a heartfelt statement from the State House, President Tinubu praised the team’s performance throughout the tournament, describing it as “awe-inspiring” and a source of national pride.
He commended the players for their strength, sportsmanship, and display of compassion, particularly highlighting their post-match visit to injured South African player Gabriela Salgado after the semi-final.
“If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” the President said, referencing the Falcons’ unbeaten run, dominant knockout displays, and impressive defensive record. He urged them to “go for the tenth” title, reminding them of the nation’s overwhelming support.
To underscore his administration’s commitment, Tinubu announced that a high-level delegation has been dispatched to Rabat to support the team. The delegation includes: Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for Finance, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs and Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission.
The President also expressed gratitude to the players’ families, coaching crew, Nigerian fans in Morocco, and diplomatic officials for their unwavering support.
“You will finish strong by the Grace of God,” he declared. “Bring the trophy home!”
Nigeria is bidding for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in tonight’s final.
