Former Senator and 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking yet another high-profile exit from the party in recent weeks.
In a resignation letter dated July 30 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from the party and all related activities.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye stated.
He lamented that, after a period of deep reflection on the state and direction of the PDP, he could no longer, "in good conscience," continue to associate with or support the party's agenda.
Melaye’s departure comes on the heels of the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to whom he is a close ally. The twin resignations have further heightened speculation of a possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), although neither Melaye nor Atiku has officially declared their next political destination.
Political observers view Melaye’s exit as a major blow to the PDP’s influence in Kogi State, where he had played a significant role in mobilizing grassroots support during past elections.
As of press time, the PDP has not issued a formal response to Melaye’s resignation.
