Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a mentor, patriot, and symbol of integrity who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a tribute released on Saturday, July 13, 2025, El-Rufai reflected on Buhari’s remarkable journey through Nigeria’s history — from his early days as a military officer, to becoming military head of state in 1983, and eventually emerging as a democratically elected president in 2015.
“President Buhari stood up for our country in war and peace. He made lasting contributions to national progress and embodied resilience,” El-Rufai stated. “Despite three electoral defeats, he never gave up. Instead, he built a new coalition that gave birth to the APC, and in 2015, made history by defeating an incumbent president.”
El-Rufai praised Buhari’s character, describing him as a man of few words but immense integrity, humility, and connection to the masses. “He had a calm charm and a strong moral compass that endeared him to ordinary Nigerians who trusted him to defend their interests,” he said.
Recalling their personal political relationship, El-Rufai disclosed that Buhari played a pivotal role in shaping his political path. “He asked me to lead the CPC Renewal Committee after the 2011 elections and later encouraged me to contest for governor of Kaduna State. He attended my campaign flag-off in 2014 and stood by me through to victory.”
The former governor expressed gratitude for the trust Buhari placed in him and the counsel he offered during and after his time in office. “Even when we had policy disagreements, he was always accessible and respectful.”
El-Rufai concluded his tribute by praying for divine mercy upon the late leader. “May Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort his family, especially his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and their children who stood firmly by him.”
President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on July 12, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian political history.
