Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending a long-standing affiliation with the party.
In a letter submitted to the APC chairman in Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal said his resignation takes immediate effect. The former SGF, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari, stated that he would soon disclose his new political alignment.
“In due course, I will make public my current political affiliation, where I plan to join compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all citizens,” Lawal wrote in the personally signed letter.
The APC, however, has dismissed his departure as politically motivated. The party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Ijeoma Arodiogbu, accused Lawal of harboring bitterness over not being picked as running mate to President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
Arodiogbu further alleged that Lawal’s criticisms of the Tinubu administration were veiled personal grievances masked as opposition to the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
In response, Babachir Lawal denied ever vying for the vice presidential position, insisting that his opposition was based on principle and dissatisfaction with current government policies.
“Who said I ever wanted to be Vice President? That’s a lie. I never begged anyone,” Lawal told journalists. “My position on Tinubu is based on principle, not personal ambition.”
He criticized the administration for what he described as policies that have worsened the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Lawal is reportedly aligning with the opposition coalition involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, signaling deeper rifts within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
