The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
This was announced in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The declaration follows the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier proclaimed.
Making the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the holiday as a mark of national respect for the late President’s decades of public service and his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic governance and unity.
> “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The Minister further called on Nigerians to use the day to promote peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, reflecting on the ideals that Buhari stood for.
In continuation of national mourning, flags are to fly at half-mast throughout the country until Saturday, July 19, 2025, as earlier directed.
The Federal Government also extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the former President’s soul.
