The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on state and local governments across the country to build transit and permanent lodges for corps members, in a bid to expand accommodation and bolster the welfare and security of youths deployed for national service.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the appeal during the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Represented by the Deputy Director of Operations, NYSC South East Area Office 1, Enugu, General Nafiu emphasized that the welfare of corps members remains a non-negotiable priority for the scheme.
“The NYSC enabling law, Cap N84 LFN 2004, clearly defines the obligations of corps employers, which include providing accommodation, transport allowance, healthcare, and a safe work environment,” he said. “State and local governments must rise to the occasion and build transit and permanent lodges for corps members to ensure their comfort and safety.”
He expressed concern over what he described as a “pervasive negligence” by some corps employers who fail to meet these statutory obligations, leading to increased truancy and a rise in the number of corps members absconding from service.
“Inspection visits across the country show that many employers cannot even account for the whereabouts of corps members, which is unacceptable,” he added.
In response, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Chief Richard Idike, reaffirmed the state's commitment to the welfare of corps members.
"We are working to enhance their monthly stipend and ensure adequate security across the state. They are the future of this nation, and we must protect and empower them,” Idike said.
Also speaking, the NYSC Coordinator in Ebonyi State, Mrs. Oladeinde Foluke, noted that the workshop theme, “Strengthening NYSC/Corps Employers’ Partnership for Improved Mutual Benefits,” was both timely and strategic.
She emphasized the importance of collaboration between corps employers and the scheme to foster a more conducive environment for service, learning, and national integration.
The event featured expert lectures on enhancing the NYSC/corps employers’ relationship, focusing on best practices in administration, security, and welfare support.
