The House of Representatives has concluded legislative work on the Bill seeking to upgrade Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, to a Federal University of Science and Technology.
The milestone was reached on Monday, July 22, 2025, with the House approving the third and final reading of the Bill, marking the end of its journey in the lower legislative chamber.
This follows the earlier consideration and adoption of the report by the House Committee on University Education, which had been tasked with reviewing the Bill.
With this development, the Bill is set to move to the Senate for concurrence upon resumption of plenary in September, after the National Assembly’s annual recess. The Senate’s concurrence is expected to be largely procedural before it is transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
The lawmaker who sponsored the Bill, Idu Igariwey representing Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency, expressed delight over the progress, noting it as the result of years of sustained legislative advocacy aimed at expanding higher education access and technological advancement in the region.
“This is a major step forward for education and development in Ebonyi and the South East. I thank my colleagues for supporting this vision,” the sponsor said.
The upgrade, once signed into law, is expected to reposition the institution as a centre of excellence in science, technology, engineering, and innovation.
Stay tuned for updates as the Bill proceeds to the Senate and awaits presidential assent.
