The Ebonyi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated Abakaliki FC for their heroic and inspiring campaign in the 2025 President Federation Cup (PFC), where the club finished as runners-up after a dramatic 4–3 penalty shootout loss to Kwara United in the final — a fairytale run that captured national attention.
Popularly known as “De Rice Boys,” Abakaliki FC stunned football fans across the country by eliminating top-tier sides including Enyimba FC, Katsina United, Ikorodu City, and Nasarawa United on their way to the final, earning respect and admiration for their fearless and determined style of play.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Ndubuisi Nwogha, and Secretary General, Comrade Cosmas Egba, SWAN hailed the team’s discipline, unity, and resilience, noting that their performance not only inspired football enthusiasts nationwide but also elevated the sporting image of Ebonyi State.
“Your remarkable performance and fearless display against established Nigerian football giants have earned you a place in the annals of the Federation Cup. You are champions in every sense and a source of pride to Ebonyi State and the entire Southeast,” the statement read.
SWAN also praised Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his steadfast moral and financial support for the team, describing his role as instrumental to their success. The association noted that the Governor’s passion for youth empowerment and sports development is beginning to yield visible results.
“The Governor’s sustained support for Abakaliki FC has rekindled hope and strengthened the dreams of young talents in Ebonyi. His leadership is a catalyst for the sporting renaissance of our state,” the association stated.
Special commendation was also extended to the Chairman of Abakaliki FC, Senator Joseph Obinna Ogba, and the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Prince Richard Idike, for their strategic leadership and unwavering commitment to the club’s growth.
SWAN equally acknowledged the efforts of Head Coach Ifeanyi Onyedika, Team Captain Cyril Timothy, Assistant Coach Omah Joseph, and the passionate Supporters’ Club for their dedication, sacrifice, and unity throughout the tournament.
As Abakaliki FC prepares for future competitions, SWAN encouraged the team to build on their historic achievement, urging them to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to representing Ebonyi State on even bigger platforms.
“Your journey is more than football — it is a story of courage, belief, and collective spirit. Keep the momentum alive. The future is indeed bright,” SWAN concluded.
