A Nigerian crypto influencer and social media personality, Gaius Chibueze, is at the center of an emotional and controversial storm after announcing the death of his father just hours after publicly celebrating the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Chibueze had taken to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the news of Buhari’s death broke to express scathing criticism of the former president, accusing him of causing widespread suffering and mismanaging Nigeria during his time in office.
In his tweet, he wrote:
> “Buhari was a Terrible President. We must not pretend now!
May his Soul get what he did to NIGERIA!”
The post sparked intense reactions online. While some commended Chibueze for speaking his truth, others condemned the timing and tone of the message, calling it disrespectful to the dead.
But in a twist of fate, Chibueze returned to the same platform just hours later to share heartbreaking news — his own father, Chizueze Ngene, had passed away in their family home in Enugu State.
> “A few minutes ago, my father passed away in his home in Enugu State. I am comforted by memories like when I was just 5 years old and he was already teaching me how to read the Bible and preach from house to house as a Jehovah’s Witness,” he wrote in a touching tribute, accompanied by a photo of him as a child with his late father.
The shocking coincidence drew strong reactions from netizens, with some trolls mocking him and implying that his father's death was karma for his earlier comments about Buhari.
One user, @Al_Ameen_Yabo, wrote:
> “Death comes for us all. He mocked Buhari in death, only for his own father to pass hours later. A solemn reminder that none of us is above mortality. Show respect, it might be you next.”
Another, @BellagioAn2118, posted a much harsher message, sparking outrage:
> “Another Ipobidiot bites the dust. For this write-up about fPMB that your father should burn in h£ll… Animals!!!”
However, rather than backing down, Chibueze doubled down on his stance, blaming Nigeria’s poor healthcare system — which he argued was a result of decades of bad governance — for his father’s death.
> “Buhari was a useless president. If they had built good hospitals in Nigeria, he wouldn’t have been flying to London for treatment. If there were good hospitals in Nigeria, my father might still be alive. I was only waiting to fly him to Turkey to replace the batteries in his chest. God punish any Nigerian politician who refuses to do their job,” he tweeted.
The dramatic turn of events has continued to trend online, reigniting fierce debate over the legacy of President Buhari, the moral limits of public criticism, and the bitter realities of Nigeria’s broken healthcare system.
As the nation continues to react to the death of a former leader, Chibueze’s personal loss serves as a raw and painful reminder of the everyday tragedies endured by many Nigerian families amid decades of systemic neglect.
