The 62nd birthday celebration of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, held at Abakaliki, turned into a rousing tribute to a man widely acknowledged as a transformational leader, a political stabilizer, and a builder of men.
The event, organized by the DUN Divine Foundation, brought together prominent stakeholders from Ebonyi State and beyond. Speaker after speaker recounted personal and collective testimonies of how Umahi’s leadership style, generosity, and commitment to development have impacted lives and institutions.
Pastor Nwachukwu Eze, Member representing Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, described the celebrant as his “destiny helper,” praising him for elevating others regardless of past political disagreements.
“He forgave me despite our political differences and gave me the platform I stand on today. Umahi taught me that leadership is not about bread alone but about vision, reflection, and purpose,” he said.
Pastor Eze shared fond memories of managing the #EndSARS Youth Engagement Programme, which Umahi entrusted him with, leading over 1,000 youths in a week-long crisis-free programme. He said the leadership lessons he gained from Umahi remain invaluable.
“He once asked: ‘What can you offer your generation that they cannot resist?’ That question drives me everyday in the National Assembly,” Eze added.
Cletus Ofoke, Chairman of the DUN Divine Foundation Executive Committee and former As Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, was blunt in his remarks: “Without Umahi in the Ministry of Works, Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda would have died on arrival. He is the soul of infrastructure delivery in this administration.”
Former Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB Chairman, Hyacinth Ikpor, expressed confidence in the continuity of Umahi’s vision through Governor Francis Nwifuru.
He declared: “2027 is a done deal for Mr. President and Governor Nwifuru, thanks to Umahi’s legacy and influence.”
Prince Richard Idike, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, likened Umahi’s leadership to a practical workshop: “He made engineers out of us without certificates. He lifts people and never forgets his followers.”
Similarly, Obinna Nwachukwu hailed Umahi as a global leader and mentor: “Working with Umahi is like enrolling in a school of excellence. He carries everyone along and uplifts those around him.”
The event’s Planning Committee was chaired by Chief Emeka Akpuenika, former Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, who coordinated the grand celebration with a blend of entertainment and reflection.
Representing the celebrant, Chief Austin Umahi thanked guests for their outpouring of love and pledged that Senator Umahi would continue rendering humanitarian services and remain committed to national and state development.
“This show of love proves that the people truly value purposeful leadership. Senator Umahi is grateful and remains committed to service,” he affirmed.
Also in attendance were current and former government officials, including Chidiebere Uzor, former Onicha LGA boss, who shared personal testimonies of how Umahi raised many from “grass to grace” in both politics and business.
As the curtains fell on the event, one thing remained clear: Senator David Umahi’s influence transcends politics because it is about bold impact, empowerment, and legacy.
