Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the brutal killing of over ten innocent citizens in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing it as “unprovoked violence” that must not be allowed to stand.
Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, took to his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, to express deep sorrow over the gruesome attack that has sent shockwaves across the Southeast region.
“I am deeply saddened by the gruesome killing of 10 innocent citizens in Ogboji, Orumba South LGA of Anambra State. The murder of defenceless Nigerians by criminal elements must never be normalised,” Obi stated.
The victims, mostly indigenes of Ebonyi State attending a town union meeting, were reportedly attacked by unidentified gunmen in broad daylight, sparking outrage and calls for justice from various stakeholders, including political leaders, civil society groups, and local residents.
Peter Obi, known for his consistent advocacy for peace and good governance, emphasized that no Nigerian should live in fear or be subjected to arbitrary violence.
He said the right to life, movement, and peaceful assembly must be respected and upheld by all means.
“This act of unprovoked violence is totally unacceptable. The freedom to live, move, and assemble peacefully anywhere in Nigeria is a fundamental right that must be protected. No individual or group should be allowed to operate above the law,” Obi added.
He offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the tragic incident.
“I condole with the families of the deceased and pray for the swift recovery of the injured,” he said.
Obi’s reaction has garnered wide attention on social media, with thousands of his followers and political supporters echoing his call for accountability and justice.
Many described the attack as part of the growing insecurity that continues to plague the country, especially in the Southeast.
The Anambra State Police Command has yet to issue a detailed update on the investigation into the killings.
However, community leaders and concerned citizens have called on both the state and federal governments to swiftly apprehend those responsible and ensure such violence does not recur.
Security analysts have warned that continued silence and inaction in the face of such attacks could embolden criminal groups and further destabilize the region.
Meanwhile, human rights organizations and peace advocates have joined Obi in calling for reinforced efforts to protect citizens, especially in rural communities where security presence is minimal.
Peter Obi’s firm stand reflects a growing consensus among Nigerians that acts of violence targeting innocent people must be addressed decisively.
As the nation mourns yet another senseless loss of lives, the call for justice and lasting peace grows louder.
