The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has announced the completion of more than 40 kilometres of road projects across his constituency within three years in office, even as he flagged off the construction of a fresh two-kilometre road project in Amike Aba, Ebonyi Local Government Area.
The latest project, which links Amike-Aba Town Hall to Ozibo Village in Echiaba Development Centre, is designed to improve rural connectivity, stimulate commercial activities and enhance access to surrounding communities.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at Amike-Aba Town Hall during the weekend, Nwebonyi described the project as another milestone in his administration's infrastructure agenda, stressing that it forms part of the 2025 Constituency Intervention Programme aimed at accelerating grassroots development.
He disclosed that the two-kilometre road would be executed in phases, beginning with the construction of the first one kilometre, and would be completed using reinforced concrete pavement to guarantee durability in view of the terrain and soil conditions of the area.
According to the lawmaker, the choice of concrete pavement was informed by the need to provide long-lasting infrastructure capable of serving the benefiting communities for between 30 and 50 years.
Nwebonyi said the project would not only improve transportation but also unlock economic opportunities by opening up adjoining communities and providing easier access to farms, markets and residential areas.
He stated that the newly inaugurated project adds to an expanding portfolio of constituency-funded infrastructure executed across Ebonyi North since his inauguration into the Senate.
The senator revealed that his administration has so far delivered over 40 kilometres of road projects comprising more than 10 kilometres of concrete pavement roads, over 30 kilometres of earth roads, in addition to numerous culverts and bridges strategically constructed across the district.
He maintained that every project undertaken under his watch was conceived to address the developmental needs of rural communities while ensuring value for public resources.
"I am determined to redefine representation through projects that will stand the test of time. What we are building today is infrastructure that future generations will benefit from," he said.
The Deputy Chief Whip attributed his performance to the support of Governor Francis Nwifuru, whom he commended for creating an enabling environment for development and for his extensive investment in road infrastructure across Ebonyi State.
He also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for sustaining constituency intervention funding through the National Assembly, saying the initiative has enabled legislators to deliver impactful projects directly to their constituents.
Nwebonyi assured residents that more infrastructure projects would be executed across the senatorial district as part of efforts to deepen development and improve the living standards of the people.
Chairman of Ebonyi Local Government Area, Barrister Chinedu Uburu, described the senator's performance as impressive, saying the scale of infrastructure delivered within less than three years had strengthened public confidence in democratic representation.
Similarly, stakeholders including the APC Zonal Chairman for Ebonyi North, Chief John Nwankata; former Commissioner, Architect Mbam Ogodo; the Traditional Ruler of Nkaleke Echara Community, HRH Eze Sunday Nkwegu Oketa; and other community leaders commended the senator for prioritising people-oriented projects.
They passed a vote of confidence on the lawmaker and urged the people of Ebonyi North to sustain their support for his leadership, citing what they described as his visible developmental footprint across the zone.
Earlier, the contractor handling the project, Engr. Mustapha Ahmed of Gosima Construction Company Limited, assured residents that the road would be completed within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining the highest engineering standards.
The event attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, party faithful, youth groups and residents, who expressed optimism that the project would significantly improve socio-economic activities in the benefiting communities.
