The Ebonyi State Government has dismissed claims of negligence against Greenfield Metals Ltd following the recent collapse of a mining site in Ihietutu, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, which claimed two lives last Friday.
Contrary to reports alleging that the company was operating illegally, the government affirmed that Greenfield Metals holds a valid mining license and operates within the law.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the site on Wednesday, the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Hon. Chidi Onyia Emmanuel, who led a team of federal mine officers, security agencies and community leaders, said preliminary findings point to a natural occurrence rather than recklessness on the part of the operators.
“We are here because of the unfortunate incident that claimed two lives. Mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards. From our findings, this was a natural occurrence and not a result of negligence,” Onyia said, while sympathising with the bereaved families.
He assured that investigations were ongoing with the involvement of relevant regulatory agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, the police, DSS and Civil Defence Corps. “If we find recklessness, we will act accordingly. But if it is a natural disaster, we must accept it as such,” he stressed.
The commissioner further appealed for responsible media reporting, cautioning against narratives that could deepen the grief of affected families. He reiterated that Ebonyi State does not condone illegal mining activities and fully respects licenses granted by the federal government.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Executive Officer of Greenfield Metals Ltd, Mr. Henry Ahanotu, described the development as “deeply unfortunate,” noting that the company prioritises safety and regularly enforces health and environmental standards.
“We maintain strict health, safety and environmental protocols, and our facilities undergo routine inspections. This incident came as a shock, but we are investigating the root cause to prevent a recurrence,” Ahanotu stated.
He also highlighted the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts, saying Greenfield Metals has invested in road construction, scholarships and job creation for host communities.
Community leaders echoed the company’s contributions. Prince Fabian Chukwu, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ihietutu Development Union, said: “The company has been number one in empowerment. They built the road to this site and never delayed in giving the community its due entitlements. That is why we stand by them in this unfortunate incident.”
Our correspondent observed during the visit that Greenfield Metals has suspended operations at the site pending the outcome of investigations, while pledging continued support to the victims’ families.
