The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has joined the rest of the world in marking World News Day, reaffirming the indispensable role of journalism in shaping global understanding, exposing corruption, and holding power accountable.
In a statement signed by the NUJ National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union saluted journalists across the globe for their sacrifices, often at the risk of threats, harassment, and poor working conditions, to uphold truth and transparency.
Chude stressed that despite daunting challenges in Nigeria — including intimidation by state and non-state actors, inadequate remuneration, and a lack of professional tools — journalists must remain steadfast in fulfilling their responsibilities to society.
“The NUJ commits itself at all times to promoting and protecting the interests of journalists in Nigeria and beyond. We will continue to fight to dismantle vestiges of media emasculation such as the obnoxious Cybercrime Act and other anti-media laws that impede our constitutional duty,” Chude declared.
Citing Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, he reiterated that the press must remain free to hold government accountable to the people.
The NUJ further urged journalists to maintain the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and objectivity, noting that journalism’s power to catalyze social change and policy reforms “cannot be overstated.”
World News Day is celebrated every September 28 to highlight the importance of journalism in fostering cultural understanding, shaping public opinion, and driving social transformation.
