Ebonyi State’s football ambitions are accelerating as the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Prince Richard Idike, announced a significant investment in local coaching talent aimed at elevating Abakaliki FC also known as the De Rice Boys and strengthening grassroots football development.
In a press briefing held in Abakaliki on Tuesday, Idike revealed that four Ebonyi indigenes including Harrison Obasi, Samson Igwe, Martins Mkpuma, and Clifford Nwamini have been enrolled in a rigorous three-month professional coaching certification course in Lagos.
This initiative seeks to overcome a critical barrier within the Nigeria National League (NNL), where official coaching certification is mandatory.
“These coaches bring experience to the table, but lacked formal certification, which the NNL requires for professional clubs
"By investing in our own, we’re not only raising the standard at Abakaliki FC but also empowering local talent to take the lead," he said.
Reflecting on last season’s ups and downs, the Commissioner acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, which secured its league position just weeks before kickoff. The late start hindered early team cohesion, resulting in a shaky first half. However, Abakaliki FC rallied impressively to finish as runners-up in the prestigious Presidential Challenge Cup.
“The team showed tremendous resilience and growth once the players gelled,” Idike said, emphasizing the progress made despite initial setbacks.
As the new season unfolds, Idike promised a more prepared and focused squad, backed by strategic player recruitment, stable coaching staff, and crucial financial backing.
He also lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru’s unwavering commitment to sports development in Ebonyi State.
“Abakaliki FC is fully funded. Players and staff salaries are paid promptly, boosting morale and focus. There are no distractions just a clear goal to win,” the Commissioner declared.
Idike further revealed that the club operates a feeder team, in compliance with NNL regulations, laying the groundwork for sustained talent development and long-term success. Plans are also underway to establish a female team, highlighting the state’s commitment to inclusive sports growth.
Acknowledging player turnover following last season’s relegation, Idike said some key players have moved to bigger clubs. Nonetheless, Abakaliki FC is actively rebuilding with fresh, motivated talent ready to make an impact.
“We’ve recruited promising new players who are fit, hungry, and eager to compete,” he noted.
When asked about the challenges ahead, Idike praised Governor Nwifuru’s hands-on leadership and the ministry’s readiness to achieve Ebonyi’s sports ambitions.
“Ebonyi State is carving out a path toward football prominence by investing in local expertise and nurturing homegrown talent.
“With certified coaches on the rise and a squad poised to compete, the De Rice Boys are set to make waves in the Nigeria National League.
“The governor’s vision and funding have created a strong foundation. We face no major hurdles in sports at the moment,” Idike affirmed.
