Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has joined millions of mourners across Nigeria and beyond in paying tribute to the late Evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing his passing as “a great loss to the Church and the nation.”
In an official statement released from the Governor’s Office, Governor Nwifuru said the death of the globally respected evangelist has left a deep void in the spiritual life of the country, noting: “The body of Christ mourns. Nigeria has lost a prophetic voice, a teacher of faith, and a vessel of divine wisdom.”
Dr. Uma Ukpai, who died at the age of 80, was a revered gospel minister, founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and a pioneer of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). His evangelical work spanned decades, continents, and generations, impacting countless lives with his message of faith, healing, and righteousness.
Governor Nwifuru commended the evangelist’s unwavering commitment to the gospel, saying he was more than a preacher, described him as a nation-builder and spiritual father whose ministry transcended borders and denominations.
“He ministered not just with words, but with power, compassion, and purpose,” Nwifuru said.
“Through his crusades and teachings, he brought healing to the sick, hope to the hopeless, and direction to the spiritually lost. His life was a living sermon," he added.
The Governor recalled Evangelist Ukpai’s long-standing relationship with Ebonyi State, highlighting his numerous gospel crusades and revival campaigns across various communities, including Ezzangbo, Ohaukwu, Echara, Ikwo, and Afikpo.
“We remember with gratitude how his Spirit-filled ministrations in our land brought about spiritual awakening, reconciliation, and restoration. Families were uplifted, lives were transformed, and the gospel advanced,” the statement read.
Governor Nwifuru also acknowledged the evangelist’s contributions to national moral and spiritual development, citing his bold advocacy for righteousness, integrity, and peace in public life.
“Evangelist Uma Ukpai spoke truth to power with grace. He reminded us—leaders and citizens alike that godliness exalts a nation. His voice will be missed in the corridors of faith and the conscience of the nation,” he said.
On behalf of his family, the Government, and the people of Ebonyi State, the Governor extended heartfelt condolences to Dr. Ukpai’s family, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, the people of Abia State, and the global Christian community.
“We pray the Almighty God to grant his soul eternal rest and give strength to all who mourn him. Though he has gone, his legacy remains a flame that will continue to light the path of many. Adieu, Evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai. Rest on, God’s General, until we meet to part no more," he said.
