The wife of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief (Mrs) Mary Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has distributed wheelchairs and an undisclosed amount of cash to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state to support and improve their means of livelihood.
The distribution took place on Friday at her office in Centenary City, Abakaliki, as part of activities marking the Independence anniversary celebration.
In her remarks, Mrs. Nwifuru expressed deep empathy for the beneficiaries and encouraged them to remain hopeful.
She assured them that her office, through her pet project—the BERWO Foundation and in collaboration with the State Government, would continue to support them in achieving better living conditions.
“The distribution became necessary to ease your mobility. I want to assure you of my continued commitment and dedication to your happiness and well-being,” she said.
The First Lady described persons with disabilities as “special beings—beautiful, talented, and intelligent,” and urged them never to feel inferior or isolate themselves from society.
“I’m happy we are celebrating today, and I pray God continues to give us hope so that in the end, we will all be happy. You are special friends, and you are dear to my heart,” she stated.
“As the mother of the state, I am with you both in prayers and in actions. It is because of people like you that I remain committed to this work—to ensure you are celebrated and made happy. Keep praying and never discriminate against yourselves,” Mrs. Nwifuru added.
She noted that the wheelchairs were provided by the BERWO Foundation in collaboration with the State Government to ensure beneficiaries can move freely and live more independent lives.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Nwode Emmanuela Ogochukwu from Enyibichiri in Ikwo Local Government Area, expressed gratitude for the timely intervention. She recounted her struggle with severe polio, which had left her disabled for over 30 years.
Mrs. Nwode, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Class of 2022), appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to assist her with employment opportunities to help her lead a more fulfilled life.
She also wished the First Lady a successful tenure, praying that God would continue to bless and replenish her efforts.
