As the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) gears up to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the association is set to honour one of Nigeria’s outstanding sports philanthropists and business leaders, High Chief (Dr) Williams Chibuike Nwobo, for his unwavering support for grassroots sports development.
With just 20 days to the Diamond Jubilee celebration, which runs from October 29 to 31, 2025, the Chief Executive Officer of Smart and Trusted Business Group has pledged strong backing for the historic event during a courtesy visit by members of the SWAN National Executive Committee and Local Organizing Committee to his Abuja office.
Nwobo, a household name in Ebonyi State for his annual sponsorship of the Unity Cup, expressed deep appreciation for the upcoming recognition, stating his passion for sports is rooted in giving back to the community that nurtured him.
“You can be assured that we will support you to succeed. I never knew anyone was watching. I’m only contributing my quota to the community that raised me, and I’m most grateful for this,” he remarked.
A firm believer in the power of sports as a tool for national unity and peacebuilding, Chief Nwobo emphasized its importance beyond the pitch:
“Sports is one thing that unites the nation. Even in times of crisis, sports continue to thrive. It brings people of different tribes and religions together to speak in one voice.”
SWAN Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, confirmed that the association had identified Chief Nwobo for a special recognition award for his exceptional contributions to grassroots sports in Ebonyi and beyond.
Chairman of the LOC, Ben Ogbemudia, noted that the award also aims to inspire more private sector involvement in youth development through sports, describing Nwobo’s efforts as both visionary and impactful.
Financial Secretary, Ijeoma Peter-Nwante, praised the philanthropist for his consistent commitment and urged continued partnership between the private sector and the sporting community for greater societal impact.
The 60th anniversary of SWAN promises to be a landmark event that not only celebrates six decades of sports journalism excellence but also honours individuals whose actions have elevated the spirit of sports in Nigeria.
