The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has organized a capacity-building workshop aimed at promoting professionalism, ethical standards, and mutual respect among its members.
The workshop, themed “Respect: A Priceless Attribute of Amazons,” was held in Abakaliki and brought together female journalists from across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Resource Person and Assistant News Manager at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Comrade Fortunate Ozo, described respect as a core value that defines women of strength, integrity, and purpose in the journalism profession.
“Respect is fundamental to human interaction and must be extended to all, regardless of age, social status, or background,” she said.
Ozo, a former Chairperson of Ebonyi NAWOJ, urged journalists to uphold ethical values and self-respect, noting that doing so discourages unethical practices such as soliciting public relations favors or accepting “brown envelopes.”
Quoting scriptures from 1 Peter and Romans, she also emphasized the importance of respecting constituted authority, stating that “no leader emerges without God’s will.”
In her address, Ebonyi NAWOJ Chairperson, Nkechinyere Oginyi, said the training was part of ongoing efforts to improve members’ professional competence and foster a culture of respect and unity within the association. She described Ozo’s presentation as impactful and timely.
The workshop also focused on teamwork, ethical journalism, and confidence-building as tools for strengthening the role of women in the media.
Meanwhile, the association commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for appointing women journalists to key positions in government. Notable among the appointments are Nnenna Oshibe, as Personal Assistant in the Office of the Governor’s Wife, and Chinwe Eze, as a Board Member of the Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC).
NAWOJ pledged its continued support for the state government in promoting good governance and gender inclusion.
