The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi State Chapter, has expressed readiness to collaborate with the South-East Representative on the Nigeria Cricket Federation Board, Dr. (Surveyor) Chika Okoro, to enhance the growth and visibility of cricket in the state.
This was made known during a courtesy visit by members of the association, led by its Chairman, Comrade Ndubuisi Nwogha, to Dr. Okoro at his Afikpo residence.
Comrade Nwogha commended Dr. Okoro who was the former Chairman of the Ebonyi State Cricket Association and sole sponsor of cricket in the state for his consistent efforts toward sports development and grassroots engagement.
“SWAN is committed to supporting all initiatives that promote sports growth in Ebonyi. We are ready to partner with professionals like Dr. Okoro to strengthen cricket’s presence across schools and communities,” Nwogha said.
In his remarks, Dr. Okoro thanked SWAN for its dedication to sports reporting and its role in projecting the achievements of athletes and administrators in the state.
He stressed the need for sustained investment in training facilities, mentorship programmes, and regular competitions to nurture future cricket stars.
“For cricket to thrive in Ebonyi, we must build a strong foundation through continuous development and support for young talents,” he stated.
Both parties agreed to collaborate on future programmes aimed at discovering, training, and empowering young cricketers in the state.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of media advocacy in promoting sports participation at the grassroots level.
With the partnership, Ebonyi SWAN and Dr. Okoro aim to reposition cricket as a key sporting activity capable of fostering youth development and community engagement across the state.
