The Rivers State Police Command has arrested 46-year-old Abi Baragon for allegedly attacking a woman with broken bottles after she rejected his marriage proposal.
The violent incident, which occurred on June 20, 2025, gained national attention after a viral video showed the injured woman crying for help, sparking outrage on social media.
Investigations revealed that the assault may have been triggered by the victim’s refusal to accept Baragon’s marriage proposal upon learning he was already married with four children—an allegation the suspect denied.
However, during police interrogation, Baragon reportedly confessed to the attack.
Acting on the viral report, operatives of the Human Rights Department at the State Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, deployed intelligence-led strategies and technical support to locate and arrest the suspect on October 13, 2025.
The victim is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, while the suspect remains in custody. A full investigation is underway to establish all facts surrounding the case.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the officers involved in the swift arrest and appreciated the public for their cooperation and credible information.
He assured that the Police Command remains committed to justice:
“If anyone commits a crime and runs, the Police will catch up with you. There is no hiding place for the wicked,” he said.
The suspect will face prosecution upon conclusion of the investigation.
