In a move that celebrates decades of unflinching dedication to sports journalism and development in Nigeria, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has conferred a prestigious honor on veteran journalist and sportsman, Chief Jasper Okoro.
According to Ikenna Okonkwo, the Secretary-General of SWAN, the recognition is in appreciation of Chief Okoro’s “outstanding contributions and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports in Nigeria.”
A formal letter addressed to Okoro, who once served as the South East zonal scribe of SWAN, hailed his lifelong commitment, mentorship, and passion for sports reporting elements that have shaped the careers of countless journalists and enriched the national sporting narrative.
SWAN described Okoro as a “valued pioneer and pillar of journalism,” noting that the award is a token of gratitude for his legacy in promoting credibility, fairness, and an immersive sports experience.
Popularly known as “All Games” for his athletic prowess across multiple disciplines, Jasper Okoro’s footprint in Nigerian sports dates back to the East Central States era, where he won medals in boxing, table tennis, high jump, pole vault, and football.
His influence extended into amateur boxing, where he served as a respected referee-judge and member of boxing associations across Plateau, Abia, Oyo, and the former Anambra and Imo States.
This recent accolade adds to an illustrious list of national recognitions.
Okoro was among six standout journalists honored in the maiden U.A.C.-NUJ competition, organized by the United Africa Company in collaboration with U.A.C. London and the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The awards were presented by the then U.A.C. Chairman, Chief Ernest Shonekan, who would later become Nigeria’s interim Head of State.
Okoro, visibly moved by the honor, dedicated the award to his late mentor, legendary goalkeeper Sam Aka Ibiama, former National Sports Commission Director Chief Clifford Enehi, and a past SWAN president, Honor Sirawo.
With Ebonyi State now producing two national officers of SWAN, Okoro’s latest recognition is both a personal triumph and a regional milestone.
His journey stands as a testament to passion-driven journalism and a lifelong commitment to elevating Nigerian sports on and off the field.
