The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, has called on youths in the state to desist from engaging in politics of calumny and the spread of falsehood on social media platforms.
Comrade Ochishi made the call when a group of social media influencers paid him an unscheduled visit at the NYCN Annex Office, Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
He expressed concern over the growing misuse of social media in the state, noting that instead of being a tool for innovation, business promotion, and idea exchange as practiced in advanced societies, it is increasingly being used to attack personalities and spread divisive content.
“The way we use social media in recent times does not reflect the best practices obtainable globally.
"We must use these platforms to promote development, unity, and positive ideologies not to destroy reputations," he said.
The youth leader emphasized that Ebonyians are one indivisible family and must coexist peacefully regardless of social status or background.
He warned that media-induced political crises can escalate into broader unrest, describing it as “a harmattan wind that does no man any good."
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Ochishi urged the youth to support the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State in delivering on his campaign promises.
“As a youth council, we stand firmly with the Governor and his People’s Charter of Needs agenda. When we build the youth, we build the nation,” he concluded.
