A wave of national insecurity has prompted Dr Kama Nkemkanma, the Member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, to indefinitely postpone his much-anticipated defection ceremony to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The event, scheduled for Friday, November 28, 2025, had been expected to mark a significant political realignment within the constituency and the state at large.
In a formal statement addressed to his constituents, political stakeholders, and supporters across the country, Nkemkanma explained that the decision followed deep reflection and consultations with Ebonyi State Governor,Chief Francis Nwifuru, along with senior political leaders within the constituency.
Together, they assessed the current “state of the nation,” particularly the escalating insecurity and the rising number of Nigerians affected by kidnappings and violence," he disclosed.
Describing the atmosphere as one of national grief and anxiety, the lawmaker emphasized that proceeding with a celebratory political gathering would be insensitive.
“In this moment of national trial, it is inappropriate to proceed with a celebration of this nature and magnitude. Our hearts and solidarity lie with the grieving families and all those affected by the insecurity in our land,” he stated.
The postponement highlights the pressure on political leaders to demonstrate empathy and moral judgment in the face of widespread security breakdowns.
Across Nigeria, public sentiment increasingly demands that leaders align their actions with the realities confronting citizens particularly when tragedy and uncertainty overshadow national life.
Nkemkanma extended heartfelt apologies to friends, associates, and political allies who had already travelled or made significant preparations to attend the event, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the last-minute decision.
“Your sacrifice and commitment mean the world to me, and I am truly sorry for any disruption to your plans,” he said, expressing deep appreciation for their unwavering support.
To the people of Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency, he offered gratitude for their resilience and understanding, assuring them that the defection described as “already historic” will take place at an appropriate time.
Despite the postponement, Nkemkanma reaffirmed his political alignment with President Bola Tinubu, and Governor Nwifuru, expressing strong support for their efforts to restore peace and security in the country.
“My commitment to the progress and safety of our people remains absolute. We shall overcome these challenges together," he said.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with a complex security landscape, the lawmaker’s decision stands as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with affected families and a call for collective national focus on restoring stability.
