The 2025 Izzi Super League is set for a historic expansion as external professional scouts have been engaged to select players for a brand-new club, Izzi United FC.
The announcement came from Comrade George Iboko, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), during a press briefing at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium on Saturday.
Comrade Iboko confirmed that preparations for the league’s kickoff are complete, with the Ebonyi State Governor, RT Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, slated to officially launch the tournament.
“We are fully prepared and have secured the stadium for the games. His Excellency, the State Governor, will be here to kick off the competition,” Iboko stated.
The introduction of external scouts is part of a strategic initiative to broaden opportunities for local talent, providing pathways for players to advance their football careers both within Nigeria and on international stages.
“We want our players to grow and compete at higher levels. By engaging external professionals, we ensure that the selection process identifies top talent capable of excelling locally and globally,” Iboko explained.
Players chosen by the scouts will form Izzi United FC, which will be officially registered to compete in national and regional leagues, marking a significant milestone in the professionalization of football in Ebonyi State.
The 2025 Izzi Super League kicks off today, Sunday, November 16, with an opening match featuring defending champions Mbeke against Team Ekumenyi Development Center.
Fans are eagerly anticipating a season that promises both thrilling football and a platform for emerging talent to shine.
