Former Abia State Governor and Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji, popularly known as T. A. Orji or “Ochendo”, has formally tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a development that could reshuffle the party’s political landscape in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Ward 1 Chairman of PDP in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Orji announced that his resignation is effective immediately.
He cited “wide consultations with family and associates” as the basis for his decision.
Orji expressed gratitude for his years of service under the PDP banner, saying he “appreciates the opportunities and experiences gained” during his membership.
A two-term governor of Abia State (2007–2015), Orji later served in the Nigerian Senate representing Abia Central for two terms.
He first came into elective office under the platform of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) but later joined the PDP.
Orji’s resignation comes amid a broader series of defections from the PDP in Abia State. Notably, his son, the former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, had earlier left the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His wife, Mrs. Mercy (Odochi) Orji, also departed from the party in 2024.
As of this report, the former governor has not publicly disclosed any plans regarding his next political affiliation or future ambitions.
Political analysts say Orji’s exit may weaken the PDP’s influence in Abia, especially given his stature and long-standing role in the party.
