The Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu has called on the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty on Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his conviction on seven counts of terrorism on Thursday.
Delivering the judgment, Justice James Omotoso ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, finding Kanu guilty on all charges.
Following the conviction, the government’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, urged the court to hand down the maximum penalty prescribed under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013, emphasizing that the law mandates death for several of the offences.
Justice Omotoso adjourned the court and announced that sentencing proceedings would resume later in the day.
