The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, has advised youths across the state to avoid desperation, reckless spending, and the pressure to engage in illicit activities during the 2025 Yuletide celebrations.
Ochishi, who made the appeal in Abakaliki, expressed deep concern over the rising trend of young people seeking quick and often questionable means of making money just to meet festive expectations.
He described the desperation exhibited by some youths in December as alarming and morally destructive.
According to him, it is worrisome that many young people remain idle or unserious for most of the year, only to become desperate in December pursuing “do-or-die” money-making ventures aimed at funding show-offs during Christmas.
“It is disturbing that some youths who stay unproductive from January to November suddenly wake up in December searching for desperate means of making money.
“This approach pushes many into temptations, criminality, and unholy acts that can lead to regrets. Such behaviour suggests that some people are ready to do anything for money, and that is a dangerous trend," he said.
The NYCN chairman urged parents to resist the pressure to overspend during the festive period, noting that many families divert resources meant for important needs especially education into extravagant Christmas celebrations.
“Parents must resist the temptations of bogus spending this Christmas. Instead of focusing on flashy celebrations, think of your children’s education as school resumes soon,” he cautioned.
Ochishi further warned that the Yuletide period often comes with heightened social vices and advised youths to remain disciplined, alert, and responsible. He called for a community-wide commitment to discouraging crime and maintaining peace in the state.
He also emphasized the role of the public in supporting the security agenda of Governor Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, urging residents to report suspicious activities promptly in line with the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs, particularly its focus on security and community development.
“The security of our dear state is a collective responsibility. Let us support the efforts of our Golden Governor by exposing criminal activities. If you see something, say something,” he encouraged.
Ochishi reaffirmed that building responsible youths remains central to nation-building, stressing that when young people uphold discipline and integrity, the foundation for a stronger Nigeria is secured.
