The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Oduh, further escalating the political tension in the state.
The impeachment process was initiated during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, following the formal presentation of a notice alleging gross misconduct against the governor.
The Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, who read the notice on the floor of the Assembly, said the allegations against Governor Fubara bordered on actions purportedly inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
According to the notice, which was endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly, the governor was accused of several acts said to constitute gross misconduct, although details of the allegations were not immediately made public.
Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with constitutional requirements guiding impeachment proceedings.
During the same plenary, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read a separate notice of allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh.
The Speaker noted that both notices marked the beginning of the impeachment process and assured that the Assembly would adhere strictly to due process and constitutional provisions in handling the matter.
Thursday’s development is the latest twist in the prolonged political crisis rocking Rivers State, which has seen a deepening rift between the executive and the legislature.
Efforts to reach the state government for comments on the impeachment move were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
