President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Senate to amend the Federal High Court Act to increase the number of Justices from 70 to 90.
The request was among several presidential letters read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio as the upper chamber reconvened plenary following a five-week recess for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
In addition to the Federal High Court proposal, President Tinubu also called for an amendment to the Court of Appeal Act to raise the number of Justices from 70 to 110, a move aimed at strengthening the judiciary and improving case management across the nation’s appellate courts.
The President further transmitted a letter seeking confirmation of Justice Oyewole Joseph Kayode as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Alongside this, he forwarded a bill proposing amendments to 24 health sector laws, signaling the administration’s continued focus on judicial reform and healthcare policy.
In his opening remarks, Akpabio pledged the Senate’s commitment to enacting laws that will positively impact the livelihoods of Nigerian citizens.
The Senate also paused its legislative activities to honour the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence and suspended proceedings for the day in remembrance of the late senator, who passed away on December 31, 2025.
