The town union presidents of all communities in Ebonyi State have adopted Governor Francis Nwifuru as their sole candidate for the 2027 general elections in the state.
The endorsement was made during the general meeting of the association held yesterday in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The motion for the adoption of Governor Nwifuru for a second term was moved by Barr. Petrus Elechi, town union president of Ezzama Community in Ezza South LGA, and seconded by Mr. Emmanuel Ukpayazu, town union president of Ebouwana Edda, represented by Dr. Isaac Arua. The motion was unanimously adopted by all members.
The town union presidents said the governor was adopted based on his infrastructural development, youth empowerment programmes, human capital development and restoration of peace in communities across the state.
Speaking to newsmen after the endorsement, the chairman of the association, Chief Augustine Akpu, commended Governor Nwifuru for his inclusive leadership and progress in sectors such as health, agriculture, housing and education.
He listed the construction of roads, including two-kilometre roads across communities, the Vanco flyover and tunnel, and the provision of scholarships for local and overseas master's and doctorate degree programmes to Ebonyi students as major achievements.
Akpu also said the governor had cleared the backlogs of gratuities and pensions for retired civil servants.
He said the administration’s commitment to equity and transparency had uplifted the lives of Ebonyi people regardless of party affiliations, adding that the governor deserved to be reelected.
Akpu pledged the continued support of town union presidents for the governor’s administration.
He appealed to Governor Nwifuru to approve monthly subventions for the association and provide a utility bus to enable the body run its official activities.
He also urged the governor to direct local government chairmen to commence payment of stipends to town union executives, which he said was earlier approved in 2023.
