Fellows of the European Union-sponsored Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP) have upgraded public schools in Ebonyi State through classroom renovations and donation of learning materials as part of efforts to give back to their host communities.
Under the Fellows Development Initiative of the programme, the beneficiaries renovated classroom blocks at Nkaliki Primary School, Abakaliki, donated books to pupils, and provided classroom desks to Community Primary School, Amudu in Ezza South Local Government Area.
Speaking during the handover ceremonies held at the benefiting schools, the Ebonyi State Focal Person of the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme, Mr. Amoke Victor Chukwuemeka, said the intervention reflects the programme’s commitment to community impact beyond graduate employment.
According to him, the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme was established to support fresh graduates in navigating complex labour markets and accessing meaningful employment opportunities across public and private sector institutions.
“The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme exists to support graduates as they transition into the labour market. It serves as a bridge connecting fresh graduates to work opportunities in both public and private sector entities,” he said.
He explained that the Fellows Development Initiative enables participants to execute community-based projects using contributions from their monthly stipends.
“It is a way of giving back to society from the stipends paid to the fellows by the programme sponsors. The projects are entirely funded through voluntary contributions by the fellows,” Chukwuemeka added.
In her remarks, the Ebonyi State Coordinator of NJFP Fellows, Ms. Okoloana Chiamaka Mirian, expressed appreciation to the European Union for providing young graduates with a one-year work placement opportunity accompanied by stipends.
She noted that beyond gaining professional experience, the fellows deemed it necessary to positively impact their host communities.
“Nkaliki Primary School is one of the oldest schools in Ebonyi State. We decided to renovate it and give it a new look. At Community Primary School, Amudu, we discovered that there were insufficient desks for pupils, and we decided to support them,” she explained.
Mirian further disclosed that the fellows are planning to donate whiteboards to a school in Edda Local Government Area in the Ebonyi South zone as part of the ongoing initiative.
Headmistress of Nkaliki Primary School, Mrs. Chukwu Comfort, and the Headmaster of Community Primary School, Amudu, commended the fellows for selecting their institutions for the intervention.
They noted that the renovation and donations have significantly improved the learning environment and would motivate pupils to take their studies more seriously.
Some pupils, including Master Anyigor Wisdom, Ugwumba Chiamaka and Okoro Oluebube, expressed joy over the development, describing the gesture as a major boost to their academic pursuits.
They offered prayers for the fellows and their sponsors.
The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme is designed to enhance the employability of young Nigerian graduates by equipping them with practical workplace experience while fostering community development initiatives across the country.
