The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has defeated the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the first reported polling unit in the ongoing Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
At Polling Unit 076, Sani Abacha Estate, Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the ADC secured seven of the 10 valid votes cast, while the APC received two votes. One ballot was declared invalid.
The election has recorded low voter turnout in several wards, which candidates have partly attributed to the movement restrictions imposed ahead of the polls. Dr. Moses Paul, the ADC candidate for AMAC, said the restrictions created confusion among voters, describing the situation at his polling unit as unusually tense.
Dr. Paul also alleged that party agents were threatened in areas including Takum Shara, Kabusa Ward, Dogongada, and Shereti. He claimed that some agents were warned of possible harm, a development he said was aimed at suppressing voters and influencing results in favour of the ruling party.
He further alleged incidents of vote buying in parts of the capital.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Paul expressed confidence in his victory, urging Nigerians to resist intimidation and uphold accountable leadership.
The outcome at the first polling unit marks an early symbolic gain for the ADC, though overall results across the FCT are still being collated.
