The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced a comprehensive monitoring exercise of over 25 constituency projects valued at N2.2 billion across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and the proper utilisation of public funds earmarked for developmental projects.
Upon arrival in Ebonyi State, the ICPC tracking team visited multiple project sites spanning Ebonyi, Ohaukwu, Ezza North, and Ishielu local government areas.
Key among the inspections was a newly constructed laboratory at the Ebonyi State College of Health Sciences, Ezzamgbo, funded through the office of the lawmaker representing the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency and executed by the Centre for Management Development.
The exercise also covered streetlight installations in the Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, facilitated by Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, and empowerment initiatives, including the distribution of critical livelihood support items, facilitated by Senator Ken Eze in Ebonyi Central.
Additional projects assessed included streetlight installations in Amagu, Ezza South Local Government Area, as well as feeder road constructions in various farm settlements across Ezza South LGA.
The ICPC clarified that the tracking exercise is designed not only to verify the completion status of these projects but also to ensure compliance with approved specifications and effective utilisation of allocated funds. Officials warned that contractors found to have executed projects substandardly or in breach of contractual obligations could be compelled to return to site, and, where necessary, the Commission may recommend the recovery of misappropriated funds.
The oversight team comprised representatives from the ICPC, the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, civil society organisations, and members of the media, reflecting a multi-stakeholder approach to project monitoring.
Speaking on the exercise, an ICPC spokesperson stated, “Our mandate is to safeguard public resources. This tracking exercise ensures that constituency projects translate into tangible benefits for the communities they are intended to serve. Any deviation from approved project specifications will be addressed in line with the law.”
The monitoring of these projects comes amid heightened public scrutiny of constituency project execution across Nigeria, with calls for enhanced transparency, timely completion, and impactful outcomes.
The ICPC’s engagement in Ebonyi underscores a broader commitment to strengthening accountability mechanisms at both the federal and state levels.
As the exercise progresses, residents and community leaders are expected to participate actively in providing feedback, ensuring that development interventions meet their intended purpose and deliver meaningful social and economic impact.
