The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritise continuity in both the executive and legislative arms of government ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the party’s National Convention in Abuja, Abbas urged party stakeholders to support the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, alongside experienced members of the National Assembly of Nigeria.
He argued that governance reforms initiated under the current administration require sustained implementation, stressing that nation-building is a gradual process that should not be disrupted by frequent changes in leadership.
According to the Speaker, high turnover among lawmakers has consistently weakened legislative effectiveness, eroded institutional memory, and increased the cost of governance due to repeated training of new members.
He maintained that retaining performing legislators would ensure stability, strengthen oversight functions, and enhance policy continuity.
Abbas emphasized that the legislature plays a critical role in supporting government programmes through lawmaking and oversight, noting that both arms of government must move in sync to achieve lasting results.
He warned against what he described as a cycle of “starting afresh” after every election, which he said slows national progress.
Making a direct appeal to APC leaders, the Speaker said continuity should not be limited to the presidency alone but must extend to the National Assembly to safeguard ongoing reforms and maintain momentum.
He further called for unity within the party, urging members to close ranks and focus on consolidating gains already recorded. Highlighting the strength of the APC in the North-West, Abbas said the region remains a stronghold of the party and would play a key role in mobilising support ahead of the next elections.
The Speaker also charged the newly constituted National Working Committee of the party to manage internal dynamics effectively, integrate new and old members, and prevent divisions that could undermine the party’s electoral prospects.
While acknowledging that the road to 2027 would require discipline and sacrifice, Abbas expressed confidence that consistency and collective commitment would deliver electoral success for the APC and sustain its governance agenda.
His remarks signaled an early push within the ruling party to build consensus around continuity as a central strategy for the 2027 elections.
