The Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, Mrs. Peace Agwu, has firmly denied any involvement in the alleged assault on a senior journalist in Ebonyi State, distancing herself from accusations linking her to the incident.
The denial followed claims by Comrade Benjamin Nworie, a former Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state and correspondent of ThisDay Newspapers, who alleged that individuals he described as “political thugs” loyal to the council chairman attacked him in the early hours of Monday.
In a formal petition addressed to the state council of the NUJ and copied to the Correspondents’ Chapel leadership, Nworie detailed the circumstances surrounding the incident, which reportedly occurred at his residence in Ugwuechara, Abakaliki.
According to the journalist, three unidentified assailants arrived at his residence in the early morning hours, forcefully knocking on his gate and initiating a confrontation over the removal of bamboo materials allegedly obstructing access to his compound.
He maintained that the materials, linked to an ongoing building project, posed a safety risk and had nearly caused an accident days earlier.
Nworie alleged that the situation escalated despite attempts to de-escalate tensions, with the attackers reportedly assaulting him physically and issuing threats against his life and that of his family. He credited neighbours’ intervention with preventing further harm.
The journalist further claimed that the obstruction of access roads by construction materials had been a recurring issue, compelling him to park his vehicle away from his residence for extended periods.
He expressed concern over what he described as sustained intimidation and called on security agencies and professional colleagues to take note of the threats to his safety and his household.
The allegations has raised concerns within media and civil society circles regarding press freedom, journalist safety, and the potential misuse of political influence at the grassroots level.
As of press time, there has been no official statement from law enforcement authorities confirming an investigation or arrests in connection with the incident.
Responding to the allegations, Mrs. Agwu categorically denied any knowledge or involvement, describing the claims as unfounded.
She challenged the accuser to provide verifiable evidence to substantiate the allegations. "It is a false allegation. I did not send anybody to attack him. He should bring evidence of what he is saying,” she stated.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the development underscored the need for a thorough, impartial investigation to ascertain the facts, ensure accountability where necessary, and uphold the rule of law, particularly in matters involving alleged threats to journalists and public officials.
