The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has strongly condemned the attack on its former Vice Chairman, Comrade Benjamin Nworie.
Nworie was reportedly attacked on Monday at his Abakaliki residence by suspected political thugs, leaving him with facial bruises and injuries on other parts of his body.
In a statement signed by the NUJ Ebonyi Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, the union urged security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The NUJ, Ebonyi State Council, strongly condemns the unprovoked attack on Comrade Benjamin Nworie, allegedly carried out by suspected thugs linked to the Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, Mrs Peace Agwu,” the statement said.
According to Nworie, the attackers invaded his Ugwuachara residence in the early hours of Monday, targeting him after he cleared some bamboos belonging to Mrs. Agwu from the access road leading to his home.
“The attack left Comrade Nworie with bruises, and the assailants even threatened his life. This is totally unacceptable. We have directed him to formally report the incident to security agencies. We call on the authorities to act swiftly to ensure the safety of journalists and bring the attackers to justice,” Nwafor said.
The NUJ also urged the Ishielu Council Chairman to disassociate herself from the attack by handing over the suspects to security agents for prosecution.
