Leaders of the Muslim community in Ebonyi State have lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru for his efforts to promote religious freedom and peaceful coexistence across the state.
The commendation came on Friday during a delegation to the State Executive Council Chambers in Abakaliki, coinciding with the Salah celebration.
The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Ebonyi State Chapter and leader of the delegation, Comrade Ernest Nasir Nwaze presented a declaration to the government urging that political appointments be based solely on merit, competence, and capacity, rather than religious affiliation.
“Many of us here would not have been able to fully observe our religious obligations without the support of His Excellency,” Nwaze said.
He added that the constitutional clause specifying religious considerations in political appointments should be repealed to remove a key source of religious agitation.
The Muslim leaders highlighted that politicians have historically exploited religious differences to influence public sentiment, emphasizing that a person’s faith whether Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist does not determine their loyalty or ability to serve.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by his deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, welcomed the declaration, affirming the administration’s commitment to interfaith harmony. “Ebonyi State is a model for peaceful coexistence. We celebrate all communities and ensure that everyone can practice their faith freely,” the governor said.
He also noted that societal progress depends on a foundation of peace, respect, and cooperation among all religious communities. “Peace goes beyond mere tolerance; it creates the environment needed for development and mutual respect. Ebonyi’s success lies in our ability to live together as one family, transcending religious differences,” he added.
The gathering, which included community elders, religious scholars, and political leaders, further underscored the importance of ethical governance, spiritual reassessment, forgiveness, and moral leadership in strengthening social cohesion.
Meanwhile, the APC Chairman in the State, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha has urged the Muslims to prioritize peace during the celebration in the State and beyond.
He noted that the delegation’s appeal signaled a growing push in Ebonyi State for merit-based appointments and reinforced interfaith collaboration as a cornerstone for sustainable development.
