The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Solid Mineral Development has ordered the immediate suspension of operations at Greenfield Metals Company in Ihetutu Community, Ivo Local Government Area, citing serious violations of mining regulations and environmental safety protocols.
The Committee, led by Mr. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, representing Ikwo North State Constituency, condemned the company’s unauthorized underground mining activities, describing them as a direct threat to public safety, local ecosystems, and the socio-economic stability of the host community.
According to a press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the State Assembly, Mr. Sylvester Egede, during an oversight inspection, the company failed to present key regulatory documents, including its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Impact Audit Reports (EIARs), Community Development Agreements (CDAs), and receipts of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) contributions, contravening the Nigerian Mining Act.
“Such reckless operations risk not only lives but also the environmental integrity of Ihetutu. The company is hereby sealed until full compliance is achieved,” Nwakpu stated, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing statutory mining and environmental standards.
Supporting the Chairman, Mr. Abiri Godwin Abiri, representing Izzi West Constituency, and Mr. Stephen Orji Igwe, representing Edda East State Constituency, highlighted the broader consequences of illegal mining. They noted that non-compliant operators undermine sustainable mineral development and community welfare.
In contrast, Arab Contractors Company received commendation for strict adherence to environmental safety regulations, timely documentation, and full compliance with revenue obligations.
The Committee praised the firm for implementing risk management strategies, occupational safety protocols, and community engagement frameworks that align with international best practices in responsible mining.
Represented by Mr. Kurotamuno Inioruton, Arab Contractors acknowledged the oversight and reaffirmed their commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable extraction practices, and continued support for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration.
The Committee also conducted inspections at China Oriental Quarry Company, signaling the House’s ongoing vigilance over mineral resource management and environmental protection across Ebonyi State.
Nigerian Pilot reports that illegal mining operations particularly unregulated underground extraction often result in soil destabilization, water contamination, and loss of biodiversity, making regulatory enforcement essential to safeguarding both human and ecological health.
