Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his death as a painful loss not only to the Church but to the entire society.
Umahi said he received the news of the Bishop’s demise with profound grief, noting that the late cleric’s departure marks the end of an era defined by selfless service, deep spirituality, and unwavering dedication to God and humanity.
In a statement personally signed and made available to journalists in Abakaliki on Sunday, the minister paid glowing tribute to the late bishop, whom he described as a spiritual father, moral compass, and a symbol of discipline and sacrificial leadership.
According to him, Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as a teacher of the Word and a shepherd of souls, whose calm wisdom and pastoral care touched lives across all strata of society.
“At a time when moral clarity and spiritual guidance are most needed in our society, his passing leaves a significant void,” Umahi said.
He, however, noted that even in death, the bishop’s legacy would continue to inspire generations, stressing that his impact remains evident in the lives he touched, the faith he strengthened, and the growth of the Church in Ebonyi State and beyond.
The minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic faithful, the clergy and religious of the Abakaliki Diocese, as well as the immediate and extended family of the late bishop.
“On behalf of my family and the Federal Ministry of Works, I commiserate with all who were privileged to encounter his remarkable life and ministry,” he added.
Umahi also prayed for the repose of the bishop’s soul, asking God to grant him eternal rest and give those he left behind the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
