The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has intervened in a growing political rift within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, calling on party stakeholders to embrace unity and dialogue ahead of the next election cycle.
Umahi’s intervention followed a disagreement that gained public attention after a viral video emerged on April 24, 2026, showing a clash between the senator representing Ebonyi Central, Ken Eze, and a National Assembly aspirant from Ikwo Local Government Area, Christian Nwali, during a burial ceremony in the state.
The dispute, believed to be linked to succession politics and zoning arrangements ahead of the end of Eze’s tenure, has raised concerns about internal cohesion within the party in the district.
In a bid to prevent escalation, the minister convened an emergency reconciliation meeting on Sunday with the key actors involved.
He described the disagreement as avoidable and urged both camps to exercise restraint and prioritize the collective interest of the party.
Speaking at the meeting, Umahi emphasized the need for peace and discipline, noting that while political ambition is legitimate, it must be pursued within the framework of established party structures.
He recalled that there had been an earlier understanding that the Ebonyi Central senatorial seat would rotate to Ikwo after the current tenure, but stressed that political arrangements could evolve over time.
According to him, the situation requires careful handling through consultation and structured engagement rather than public confrontation.
Umahi advised both parties to channel their grievances through appropriate leadership channels, particularly by engaging the state governor alongside selected leaders from the affected communities to arrive at a consensus.
He maintained that such an approach would ensure fairness, stability, and continuity within the party.
The minister also used the opportunity to reinforce the importance of unity within the state’s political structure, especially in view of broader national interests.
He urged party members to close ranks and avoid actions that could weaken the APC’s position in future elections.
Responding, Senator Eze expressed appreciation for the minister’s timely intervention, describing it as crucial in de-escalating tensions.
He appealed to his supporters to refrain from inflammatory remarks, particularly on social media, warning against actions that could further divide the party.
Similarly, Nwali called for calm and mutual respect among stakeholders, stressing that political differences should not undermine long-standing communal ties.
The reconciliation effort is seen as part of wider moves to maintain internal stability within the APC in Ebonyi State as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle.
