Fresh political tension appears to be building across Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 governorship election following growing calls by supporters and stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, to contest again.
The renewed agitation for Odii’s possible return into the governorship race is already generating intense political discussions across party lines, with many political observers describing him as one of the major factors likely to shape the trajectory of the 2027 election in the State.
Supporters of the businessman and philanthropist argued that the PDP in Ebonyi State still remains a formidable political force with structures spread across the 13 local government areas and wards in the State, insisting that the party is prepared to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
Political stakeholders backing Odii maintained that his participation in the 2023 governorship contest altered the political equation in Ebonyi State and introduced a new wave of political consciousness among the electorate.
According to them, the widespread support he attracted during the election remains a major indication that he still commands substantial political influence and grassroots acceptance across the State.
They further argued that discussions surrounding Odii’s possible return have continued to generate apprehension within opposition camps, especially among parties expected to participate in the 2027 governorship election.
Observers noted that Odii’s political rise in 2023 came as a surprise to many established political actors within and outside the PDP, owing to what they described as his massive grassroots mobilisation, financial strength and growing popularity among youths and rural dwellers.
Many of his supporters believe that should he formally declare interest in the governorship race, the existing political calculations and alliances ahead of 2027 may witness significant changes.
Speaking on the development, some PDP faithful said Odii had continued to sustain relationships with party loyalists and supporters despite the outcome of the 2023 election.
They also pointed to his philanthropic activities, empowerment programmes and humanitarian interventions as factors responsible for his continued popularity among residents of the State.
According to them, his empowerment initiatives were spread across the three senatorial districts without discrimination based on political affiliation, religion or local government of origin.
They further described him as a politician whose approach to politics has consistently emphasised peace, unity and non-violent engagement.
Supporters recalled that despite the tension which surrounded the 2023 governorship election, Odii maintained what they termed a peaceful disposition throughout the process.
Some political analysts in the State also believe that the growing conversations around Odii’s possible governorship ambition may intensify political realignments ahead of the election season.
They argued that the PDP would rely heavily on experienced political figures and influential grassroots mobilisers if it hopes to reclaim power from the APC in Ebonyi State.
Odii, a businessman with investments spanning manufacturing, logistics, construction, healthcare, agriculture and real estate, has over the years built a reputation around entrepreneurship and philanthropy through the Ebele and Anyichuks Foundation.
The foundation, according to his associates, has provided scholarships to thousands of students, constructed houses for indigent families and supported vulnerable groups across several communities in the State.
His supporters further maintained that his humanitarian interventions, particularly in rural communities, have contributed significantly to the increasing calls for him to return to the governorship race.
They expressed confidence that his experience in business management and leadership would place him in a strong position should he decide to contest the election.
Meanwhile, political activities and consultations have continued to intensify quietly across the State as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general election.
Although Odii has yet to make any official declaration concerning the governorship contest, political watchers believe that his next political move may significantly influence the shape and direction of the race in Ebonyi State.
