Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has reiterated his optimism about Nigeria’s future, declaring that a better nation is achievable through collective commitment, tolerance and responsible leadership.
Obi made the assertion in a video currently trending on social media, where he addressed concerns over his recent exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his history of movements across political parties.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that his political decisions have consistently been guided by principle rather than personal ambition, stressing that he remains a loyal member of any platform he identifies with.
“I am always a loyal member of any party. People may say he has left this party or that party, but those close to me understand the circumstances. In truth, I have always been compelled to leave," he said.
Obi explained that his approach to politics is anchored on peace, mutual respect and the ability to work harmoniously with others, noting that he deliberately avoids internal conflicts.
“I do not stay where there is persistent conflict. I have never engaged in public or private quarrels. I would rather concede and be seen as weak than remain in an environment defined by discord. That is not a weakness; it is a virtue,” he added.
Reflecting on his political trajectory, Obi recalled his emergence as governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), his subsequent move to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he served as vice-presidential candidate in 2019, and his eventual defection to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
His recent departure from the ADC has fueled speculations about his next political destination, with reports suggesting a possible alignment with another emerging platform. However, Obi has yet to make an official declaration.
He emphasized that his overriding objective remains the transformation of Nigeria, urging political actors and citizens alike to embrace collaboration and national interest above partisan considerations.
“My commitment is to a better Nigeria. I believe strongly that by working together across political and social divides, we can build the country we all desire,” Obi said.
The development came amid ongoing realignments within opposition circles seeking to consolidate efforts ahead of future electoral contests, even as analysts continue to assess Obi’s potential influence in shaping Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
