A former student of Ezzy Health Centre, Joy Ezeugwu, has been taken into police custody by operatives of the Force Headquarters Annex in Enugu following a petition alleging breach of data and privacy rights.
Ezeugwu was reportedly picked up from her residence at about 7:45am on Monday after being “invited” for questioning, according to police sources familiar with the development.
The invitation is linked to a petition filed by Ifeyinwa Okwudu, a former school administrator at Ezzy General Hospital, who accused the ex-student of unlawfully recording and disseminating private conversations without consent.
The dispute between both parties dates back to April when legal counsel to Okwudu demanded ₦10 million in damages alongside a formal verbal apology from Ezeugwu over the alleged violation.
At the centre of the controversy is a viral audio recording in which Okwudu was allegedly heard instructing Ezeugwu to delete a video that exposed poor conditions at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu.
Okwudu maintains that the recording was obtained without her knowledge or approval, forming the basis of her complaint now under police review.
The incident has sparked public debate, particularly on issues surrounding whistleblowing, privacy rights, and conditions within public health facilities.
It would be recalled that Ezeugwu was earlier placed on indefinite suspension by the health institution following her report highlighting the alleged poor state of facilities at the centre where she was undergoing training.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, while efforts to reach both parties for comments proved unsuccessful.
