The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has elected Engr. Sunday Andrew Opoke as its candidate for the Ebonyi North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Opoke, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the state, emerged as the party’s standard-bearer during the PDP senatorial primary election held on Wednesday in Abakaliki.
The former General Manager of the Ebonyi Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency was the sole aspirant in the exercise, which witnessed a large turnout of party members and stakeholders from the Ebonyi North Senatorial District comprising Izzi, Ebonyi, Abakaliki and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas.
Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the party’s Primary Election Panel, Mr. Solomon Onwe, formally presented Opoke as the PDP candidate for the district and charged party faithful to unite behind him ahead of the 2027 polls.
“I present to you our sole aspirant for the Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Sunday Opoke, and urge you to give him the needed support to ensure that the PDP wins in the zone during the general elections,” Onwe stated.
Addressing party members shortly after his emergence, Opoke expressed gratitude to delegates and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, assuring that the PDP remained determined to reclaim political leadership in the state and across the country in 2027.
He lamented the prevailing economic hardship in the country, attributing the situation to what he described as poor governance and inadequate leadership.
The PDP candidate pledged to pursue policies that would bring governance closer to the grassroots if elected into the Senate.
According to him, the Ebonyi North zone possesses enormous untapped mineral deposits capable of transforming the economic fortunes of the area and the state at large.
“If elected, I will attract investors to our zone to develop our natural resources, including lead, zinc and limestone, among others.
“Our zone is blessed with abundant natural resources. We need a new Nigeria and a new Ebonyi, and the time has come.
“When I become your senator, I will support women and youth development. There will be a paradigm shift in governance,” Opoke said.
Also speaking, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Chidiebere Egwu, said the successful conduct of the primary election reflected the party’s renewed strength and readiness for future electoral contests.
Egwu maintained that the PDP had regained momentum in Ebonyi State and remained committed to providing leadership capable of repositioning both the state and the nation.
He urged party members to remain united and mobilise support across the senatorial district ahead of the 2027 general elections.
