The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the state government of allegedly abandoning critical governance priorities in favour of political intimidation and vendetta against opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party raised the concern in a statement issued on Sunday by the State Chairman of the PDP, Chukwuma Igwe, and the party’s Publicity Secretary, Darlington Peter Onwe.
The PDP alleged that recent political developments and remarks linked to the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru suggested plans to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy covering the party’s state secretariat in Abakaliki.
According to the party, any attempt to revoke the property documents of its secretariat would amount to “a direct assault on constitutional democracy and multiparty political participation.”
The statement read in part: “It is deeply unfortunate that at a time when Ebonyians expect governance focused on economic revival, youth empowerment, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture and employment generation, valuable state energy and public attention appear increasingly diverted toward political vendetta, intimidation and unnecessary confrontation against opposition forces.”
The PDP further alleged that there was a growing climate of fear being orchestrated against opposition members and dissenting voices through intimidation and abuse of state influence.
The party maintained that democracy thrives on tolerance, political plurality and healthy competition, warning against what it described as attempts to suppress opposition activities in the state.
It also insisted that the PDP would resist through constitutional and lawful means any action targeted at interfering with or undermining its structures and democratic rights.
The opposition party noted that many political actors in the present administration, including Governor Nwifuru, rose to political prominence under the PDP platform, stressing that it was dangerous for any democratic government to appear intolerant of opposition voices.
The PDP consequently called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Services, the Independent National Electoral Commission, civil society organisations and members of the diplomatic community to closely monitor political developments in Ebonyi State.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to peace, democratic engagement and the rule of law, but warned that its peaceful disposition should not be mistaken for weakness in the face of alleged political oppression.
