The Presidency has dismissed as entirely false a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning sweeping constitutional amendments that would change Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the report as a fabricated narrative originating from anonymous and dubious sources, warning that it was designed to mislead the public and destabilise the country.
According to the statement, there is no such proposal before the Federal Government, nor any intention by President Tinubu to introduce a bill codenamed “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly as alleged in the circulating story.
It stressed that constitutional amendment is a rigorous and structured process under Nigeria’s laws, requiring extensive legislative scrutiny, broad consensus, and approval by a two-thirds majority of both chambers of the National Assembly, as well as concurrence from at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The Presidency further noted that such weighty national processes cannot be initiated unilaterally or driven by executive discretion, contrary to the claims being circulated.
It urged Nigerians to disregard the viral report in its entirety, describing those behind it as “agents of destabilisation” seeking to create disaffection and heat up the polity ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
The statement added that President Tinubu remains focused on ongoing economic reforms and governance priorities aimed at delivering tangible dividends of democracy to Nigerians, rather than being distracted by politically motivated misinformation.
Onanuga cautioned that the spread of fake news is expected to intensify as the nation approaches the election season, urging citizens to verify information before sharing it to avoid fuelling unnecessary tension.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to national unity, constitutional order, and the strengthening of democratic institutions across the country.
